Surgeon who performed UK's first successful heart transplant dies aged 93: How pioneering doctor gave new lease of life in 1979 to 52-year-old football fan who loved beer and cigarettes

Sir Terence English carried out the procedure on 52-year-old heavy smoker Keith Castle in August 1979. Mr Castle, a beer-loving Fulham fan, went on to live for nearly six more years.
