Zack Snyder, who is continuing his streak of Instagram posts documenting his time in the DC Extended Universe, recently shared the first photo of Henry Cavill in Christopher Reeve’s Superman suit.
Notably, the English actor wore Reeve’s suit while screen-testing for the eponymous role in Man of Steel. Cavill’s appearance in the suit helped convince Snyder and the executives that he was an optimal choice for the role.
Henry Cavill’s first Superman photo in Christopher Reeve’s suit
Zack Snyder recently shared a medium close-up shot of Henry Cavill in Christopher Reeve’s suit on Instagram.
Snyder captioned the post, “15 years ago, on this day, I pressed the shutter and met Superman. The first photo I ever took of Henry Cavill — moments before he stepped into legend. Shot on my Nikon.”
This photo comes roughly one month after Snyder treated fans to two photos of Cavill in Reeve’s suit. The first is a long shot of Cavill standing on a platform with the sunlight hitting his body and casting a shadow in front of him. Meanwhile, the second photo is a medium shot of the first one.
Cavill was cast as Superman in 2011 and first appeared on-screen in 2013’s Man of Steel. He later reprised the role three years later in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, where he went up against Ben Affleck’s Batman.
In the climax, the Kryptonian hero joined Batman and Wonder Woman in fighting Doomsday, sacrificing himself to stop the monster. Following his demise, Batman and Wonder Woman vowed to form the Justice League to protect the world in his absence.
Cavill’s Superman later returned in 2017’s Justice League and Snyder’s 2021 cut of the film after being resurrected by Batman and the League. After some initial confusion and hostility towards the group, he joined them in repelling Steppenwolf and his army.
Cavill’s future as the character was left uncertain following 2017’s Justice League’s critical and commercial underperformance. However, doubts quelled following his return in 2022’s Black Adam’s post-credits scene. Cavill’s return sparked excitement, further fueled by the actor’s announcement that his appearance was “a very small taste of what’s to come.”
However, the excitement surrounding his return was extinguished after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios. The Witcher star told fans he would no longer be playing Superman after a meeting with Gunn and Safran about the same — the former of whom rebooted with the Superman franchise with David Corenswet as part of his new, sprawling DC Universe.
