The new Wuthering Heights adaptation starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi is out this week, and ahead of its release, the film has garnered some divisive reviews.

What are the Wuthering Heights reviews saying?

On Rotten Tomatoes, Wuthering Heights has debuted to a 72% score on the review aggregator site. The divisive reviews seem split on Emerald Fennell’s new adaptation of the movie.

To some, like Daily Telegraph’s Robbie Collin, the movie works, with Collin noting “Style over substance? Not at all — it’s more that Fennell understands that style can be substance when you do it right.” Likewise, USA Today’s Brian Truitt praises the movie as feeling “like the first must-see movie of 2026, an enthralling retelling of an all-time love story through an accessibly modern lens.”

ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim was also a fan, saying “it’s the kind of romance that aches more than it comforts, leaving behind a lingering sense of tragedy and desire that feels entirely in line with Fennell’s distinctive voice.”

On the flipside, some reviews were less positive. The New Yorker’s Justin Chang mentioned that “These are clever visual conceits, and Fennell’s Wuthering Heights is certainly something to behold. I’m less convinced, for all its frenzied emoting and rain-soaked rutting, that it’s something to feel.” Slant Magazine’s Rocco T. Thompson also notes the movie “is tantalizing to behold but not so easy to swallow.”

The Wuthering Heights adaptation will be led by Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Other cast members for the film include Shazad Latif as Edgar Linton, Hong Chau as Nelly Dean, and Alison Oliver as Isabella Linton.

Along with directing, Emerald Fennell is also writing and producing the film, which will be her latest project following 2023’s Saltburn and 2020’s Promising Young Woman.

Since its release in the mid-1800s, Wuthering Heights has been widely considered one of the greatest novels ever written. The book has had countless adaptations, including film, TV, and stage versions of the novel.
