The latest adaptation of Wuthering Heights by acclaimed filmmaker Emerald Fennell has hit theaters, and there are some major changes from the Emily Brontë novel, especially at the end. The film, like the book, however, concludes with one major character’s death.
Here are all the major events that took place at the end of Wuthering Heights.
How does Cathy die in Wuthering Heights’ ending?
The entire saga of Catherine (Margot Robbie) and Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi), which sees them engage in a battle of wills with many ups and downs throughout their complicated relationship, ultimately results in Cathy dying in the closing minutes of the film.
In the latter part of Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff and Catherine’s saga reaches a dramatic stage when Cathy reveals to Heathcliff that she is pregnant with Edgar’s child. She realizes that her affair with Heathcliff was morally incorrect and pushes him away. To spite her, Heathcliff marries Isabella. He makes this clear to Isabella as well, and she agrees to the arrangement of their toxic marriage. The two enter into an intense relationship in which Isabella appears pleased to be degraded by Heathcliff, longing for his attention.
Depressed over the development of their marriage, Cathy continues to spiral downward. She locks herself in her room and starves herself. Meanwhile, Heathcliff has letters sent to Cathy through Isabella, but they never reach her as Nelly burns them all.
Ultimately, Catherine’s physical condition deteriorates further, and her pregnancy ends in a miscarriage. She even mentioned her dead baby to Nelly, but she presumes that Cathy was lying and ignores this important information. However, Cathy’s depression, self-neglect, and miscarriage developed into a fatal sepsis.
When her condition is detected by Nelly, she immediately realizes her mistake and reports the situation to Edgar. Before that, Cathy forgave Nelly for keeping Heathcliff away from her. She sends Nelly to get Heathcliff. To right her wrongs, Nelly rushes and informs Heathcliff that Catherine is dying. As Heathcliff rushes back to Cathy on horseback, Nelly rescues Isabella and saves her from her toxic marriage.
Before Heathcliff could reach Cathy, her body gave in to sepsis, and leeches ate her from within. Edgar, who had dozed off by Cathy’s side, wakes up to the horrifying sight of her demise. Soon after, Heathcliff arrives, holds on to Cathy’s pale, dead body, and calls her back. He asks his soulmate to return and haunt him, but never leave him.
The film ends with a flashback to Heathcliff and Catherine as children, followed by more scenes of how they fell in love throughout their lives.
Wuthering Heights is now playing in theatres across the United States.
