Wuthering Heights director Emerald Fennell recently spoke about the prospects of her directing a Wonder Woman movie set in James Gunn‘s DCU. Previously, the English filmmaker was attached to write a Zatanna film set in the DC Extended Universe. However, the movie got shelved before getting the chance to properly materialize.
Emerald Fennell on whether she will ever consider directing DCU’s Wonder Woman movie
While speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast to promote Wuthering Heights, Fennell was asked what she would do in a hypothetical situation where James Gunn tapped her to direct Wonder Woman.
“That would be wonderful,” she replied. However, the Promising Young Woman director stressed that because she only makes “the one thing [she is] preoccupied with at a time,” she couldn’t work on another person’s film.
She continued, “If I can’t go to my imaginary worlds, then I feel very marooned.” Fennell added, “So, those are really kind of the only places I can work from, I think.”
James Gunn addressed the development status of the first DCU Wonder Woman movie last year. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said the film was “being written right now.” He also clarified that it is a separate project from the previously announced HBO Max series, Paradise Lost, development on which Gunn said was progressing slowly.
A month later, in an interview with Urbana Play 104.3 FM, Gunn offered some more clarity on the film’s development. He said it would enter production when the script was ready. He stated that the script was still being written, adding that he would commence production immediately if it impressed him. Gunn then made it clear that he wouldn’t enter production without a “fantastic” script, as the character deserves “the best.”
Ana Nogueira, writer of Supergirl and an upcoming Teen Titans film, has reportedly been tapped to write the screenplay.
