The Writers Guild of America has canceled a major Los Angeles event amid an ongoing staff labor dispute. Guild leadership confirmed the decision days before the scheduled ceremony, citing circumstances surrounding the current strike.

The Writers Guild of America West cancels annual award ceremony amid staff strike

According to Variety, the Writers Guild of America West has canceled its 2026 Writers Guild Awards Los Angeles ceremony. Its non supervisory staff remain on strike. “I am writing to share the news that the 2026 Writers Guild Awards Los Angeles ceremony will be cancelled. An alternative celebration for this year’s Los Angeles based nominees will be scheduled at a later date,” WGA West president Michele Mulroney wrote. The Guild had scheduled the event for March 8 at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE.

The non supervisory staff, organized under the Pacific Northwest Staff Union, have been on strike since February 17, 2026. The union represents about 110 employees and is seeking higher wages and “just cause” protections in the employee discipline process. Staff have picketed outside WGAW headquarters at 3rd and Fairfax and the Writers Guild Theater. The Guild has canceled member events and closed the building to members and the public.

In an Instagram post, the Writers Guild Staff Union said management threatened to cancel the show over the latest offer. “Make no mistake: This is an attempt by WGAW management to drive a wedge between union staff and WGA membership when we should be building unity ahead of (studio negotiations),” the staff union said.

On Sunday afternoon, it added, “We are saddened by the cancellation of the Writers Guild Awards Los Angeles ceremony.”

Mulroney stated, “As a labor union, we would not ask our guests to cross a picket line to attend the awards show.” She added, “The WGAW staff union has the right to strike, and our exceptional nominees and honorees deserve an uncomplicated celebration of their achievements.” The Writers Guild of America East will proceed with its March 8 ceremony at the Edison Ballroom in Manhattan.
