Ethan Slater is offering fans a closer look at the demanding process behind his Tin Man transformation in Wicked 2, aka Wicked: For Good. The actor, who returns as Boq, revealed that the prosthetic work for the character required hours in the makeup chair.

Ethan Slater has opened up about the preparation behind his role in Wicked: For Good, describing the daily prosthetic process required to transform him into the Tin Man. In the second installment, Slater returns as Boq. The actor explained that the transformation into the Tin Man involved an extensive daily routine that lasted for several hours throughout filming.
In a conversation with Parade, Slater was asked, “Is that really you in that metallic costume? It looks cumbersome?” The actor confirmed that viewers will see him performing beneath the metallic look. He stated, “That’s my face moving. If I lifted an eyebrow, the eyebrow lifted. If I twitched my cheek, my cheek twitched. So I was really acting through the prosthetics, and they didn’t have to change it in post-production at all.”
Slater clarified that the only digital effects were for the Tin Man joints. He said, “I think a big question is how much CGI is there, and the answer is just the Tin Man joints.”
The actor further revealed the extent of the transformation process. When asked how long he spent in hair and makeup, he responded, “When it started, it was about five hours a day.” Slater also noted that the team became increasingly efficient as filming progressed. He said, “By the end, it was under three. [Makeup prosthetic designers] Mark [Coulier] and Stephen [Murphy], and Frances Hannon got really good at it.”
The actor previously discussed the experience on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up, sharing that he filmed approximately 20 days while wearing the full Tin Man prosthetic look.
