The Pitt star Taylor Dearden opened up on why phones were not allowed on the sets of the acclaimed show. Dearden explained that it was a “John Wells rule,” referring to the executive producer of the show, who also directed several episodes. Dearden opened up on how this one rule helps make things more engaging.
Taylor Dearden explains why John Wells had a no-phones rule on The Pitt set
Taylor Dearden, who plays Dr. Mel King in The Pitt, one of the most acclaimed medical dramas to premiere in recent years, revealed that they have a strict “no phone” policy on their sets. In a new discussion with Keltie Knight on Live From E!: Actor Awards 2026, Dearden explained this policy and how it was useful on the set.
“It’s a John Wells rule,” Dearden explained, “It’s to keep us within the world, which I love it personally.” She continued, “It keeps us engaged and involved with our scene, but also with each other. So, when we do have a second to sit, we have to talk and be interactive. It really helps the team building.”
Dearden further explained how her famous parents, Bryan Cranston and Robbie Dearden, reached her during the shooting. She added, “I would leave my cell phone in my dressing room…and I give the number of the production to friends and family for emergencies.”
The Pitt was nominated for two prizes at the Actor Awards. Since its premiere in January 2025, it has been one of the most acclaimed shows on television this year. With the first season, The Pitt has already earned several accolades. It has won five awards at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series. It has also won Best Television Series – Drama at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards.
The second season of The Pitt is underway right now. It has already been renewed for a third season.
