When The Grammys is leaving CBS and why it’s moving to ABC

The Grammy Awards will officially leave CBS and move to ABC starting in 2027. In October 2024, Disney won the rights to air the Grammys through a major 10-year deal that runs from 2027 to 2036. Under the agreement, the show will air on ABC and stream on Hulu and Disney+.

CBS lost the rights to The Recording Academy after the two sides failed to agree on a new contract during their exclusive negotiation period. Once that window closed, the Academy spoke with other companies. Disney made the strongest offer and won the rights.

Disney views live events as extremely valuable. With this deal, ABC will air the Grammys, the Oscars, and the Super Bowl in the same year. ABC already broadcasts major events like the CMA Awards and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

In a joint statement (via Deadline), Disney and Recording Academy leaders praised the deal, calling the Grammys a key addition that will help promote music and artists worldwide. Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden said, “As The Walt Disney Company combines forces with The Recording Academy to open this exciting new chapter in the history of The Grammys, we do so with pride and gratitude.”

Harvey Mason Jr., Recording Academy’s CEO, said, “We are completely thrilled to be bringing The Grammys and other new music programming to the Disney ecosystem. We are grateful to our long-standing partners at CBS and now honored to be joining with Disney, an iconic company where creators have always been at the forefront.”

The 68th annual Grammys marked the final time CBS will host the event after a historic 53-year run. Starting next year, the awards will take place at a new home and air on ABC, Hulu, and Disney+.
