The newly dropped trailer of Dune: Part Three introduces a new villain, Scytale, played by Robert Pattinson. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the epic space opera installment serves as the final chapter and is adapted from the 1969 novel Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert. It takes place 17 years after the second film, featuring Paul Atreides as the emperor of the universe, struggling to maintain peace. Alongside that, he also has to tackle a conspiracy aimed at destroying his rule. With Pattinson’s character potentially turning the conflict into a psychological war against Atreides, here are details about his identity and significance to the plot.
Dune 3 trailer villain Scytale played by Robert Pattinson explained
Scytale is a shapeshifting Bene Tleilaxu Face Dancer and manipulator who plays a key role in a conspiracy against Paul Atreides. In the recent trailer, he appears as a pale man with bleached hair, capable of taking on different identities and forms.
In Dune: Messiah, the second book in the series, Scytale becomes involved in a plot against Muad’Dib and his rule through his involvement with Atreides. As part of the plan, they send a ghola (a clone without memories) to Atreides. To raise the stakes, the clone is none other than Atreides’ fallen ally, Duncan Idaho.
Their motive is to test whether a ghola’s memories and personality can be restored, ultimately hoping to make the Bene Tleilax immortal. When Duncan Idaho’s ghola regains his memories, it leads to a major confrontation between Atreides and Scytale. After losing to Atreides, Scytale is later reborn and takes a position on the ruling council of the Bene Tleilax. As the last surviving member of the council, he travels through space in hopes of restoring his tribe (via Games Radar).
While the trailer doesn’t reveal much of the plot, it is likely to include key elements from Dune: Messiah, including Scytale’s mission involving his pursuit of immortality and Duncan’s ghola.
During the teaser launch event, Pattinson shared brief details about his character’s identity. He said, “He’s an unusual character in the book. I mean, you can’t really tell whose side he’s on, and it’s kind of what makes him quite interesting.” Dune: Part Three releases on December 18, 2026.
