Stranger Things Season 5 just wrapped up. However, viewers were left wondering about the mysterious rock Henry Creel held in his hands during the finale. After the episode aired, the showrunners, the Duffer Brothers, explained the decision behind keeping it vague in the show.
Here’s what the showrunners said about the mysterious object.
What was the rock Henry found in Stranger Things Season 5 finale?
Stranger Things’ Season 5 finale, titled “The Rightside Up,” briefly delved into how Henry Creel, aka Vecna, got his powers.
The episode featured a memory of Henry encountering an injured scientist in a cave, clutching a suitcase. After the scientist shoots at young Henry’s hand, Henry responds by smashing a rock on his head, knocking the scientist unconscious. He snatches the suitcase and opens it, where he finds a glowing rock. Upon touch, he sees a vision of the Mind Flayer, who tells him, “Find me.” The rock then turns into strange particles and enters Henry’s bloodstream through the gunshot wound.
While this explained how Henry got his powers, there’s no explanation for what the rock actually is. Fortunately, in a recent interview with Variety, the Duffer Brothers said that a spin-off series will explain what the object is.
“The spinoff is going to delve into that and explain that, and you’re going to understand it,” Matt Duffer said. “But it’s a completely different mythology. So it’s not a deep exploration of the Mind Flayer or anything like that. It’s very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining,” he added.
The showrunners did not offer further details on this spin-off series. However, they said, “We’re going to start working on it again on Monday. We’ve been working on it on and off.” So, it is reasonable to believe the details on what the rock was, where it came from, how the scientist got his hands on it, and who he was running from could be answered in the potential spin-off series.
Meanwhile, fans can revisit Hawkins with Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, an animated spin-off series set between Seasons 2 and 3, which is scheduled to arrive sometime in 2026. Although the show will feature fan-favorite characters, different actors will be voicing them.
