It: Welcome to Derry showrunner Andy Muschietti has revealed that the series originally featured a prominent character from the films, who was cut due to story constraints. In a recent interview, Muschietti shared that an origin story for Sonia Kaspbrak, the overbearing mother of It’s Eddie Kaspbrak, was written into the series before being cut.
Andy Muschietti explains why Eddie’s mother was cut from It: Welcome to Derry
In an interview with Straw Hat Goofy, Andy Muschietti revealed that a young Sonia Kaspbrak, Eddie’s mother, appeared in an early draft of It: Welcome to Derry.
“She was an outsider,” Muschietti shared. He added that her origin story would have tied into the origins of the Paul Bunyan statue.
Muschietti stated that in an early draft, Sonia was a reporter from Portland working for a small newspaper. He added, “She’s covering the drama of [the] Paul Bunyun [statue] being built, and people hate it, and they’re protesting.”
He then said that Sonia quickly changed her coverage after realizing Derry was being plagued by problems like disappearing kids.
Muschietti revealed that Sonia was cut as all eight episodes of the show had “so much story” to tell. He also touched upon Sonia’s planned character arc. Muschietti said she initially rejected Derry’s strange environment, but slowly fell victim to the fog’s influence and became “complacent.”
“The funny thing about Sonia is that she starts as a person who wants to actively denounce what’s going on,” the filmmaker explained. “And slowly over the course of the episode, she falls into the fog, and she becomes like a very complacent member of this community. And eventually she becomes the mother of Eddie.”
New episodes of It: Welcome to Derry drop every Sunday at 9 p.m. Eastern Time (ET). The series has a 79% fresh rating and a 76% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes as of writing.
Muschietti co-created the series with his sister and producing partner Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs. The series’ cast includes Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, James Remar, Stephen Rider, and Matilda Lawler, among others.
