2025’s Superman may have impressed critics and the general audiences upon its arrival, but according to seasoned DC writer Grant Morrison, the James Gunn directorial venture left much to be desired. The author of the twelve-issue All-Star Superman comic series, which served as inspiration for David Corenswet’s Man of Steel, opened up about the issues with Gunn’s debut DCU outing in a recent interview, primarily highlighting the character’s updated origin story.

Grant Morrison didn’t like Superman ‘getting beaten up’ in James Gunn’s 2025 film

The Scottish comic book writer recently noted that the DC co-CEO’s take on the Last Son of Krypton was the “best Superman movie yet.” However, it did have plenty of shortcomings.

“It became the closest to capturing what Superman feels like. I had a few things I didn’t like about it,” Grant Morrison told Half the Picture. He then pointed out his first qualm with the 2025 movie. “[Gunn] made specific choices that I think were made for dramatic reasons that were understandable. In order to make him seem more relatable, he had him getting beaten up an awful lot. I want to see him stop getting beaten up and fight back,” Morrison stated.

The second aspect of James Gunn’s Superman that bugged Morrison was the character’s Invincible-like origin story. Unlike his backstory in the comics, the movie established that Kal-El’s Kryptonian parents had actually sent him to Earth with the intentions of conquering the planet.

“I didn’t like it because I prefer it when Krypton’s this lost utopia,” Morrison explained. “I like the idea that there was something amazing, and nature just wiped it out. Their own lack of attention to detail allowed them to be wiped out. I think there’s something much more poignant about that.”

Adding to his critique, Grant Morrison stated, “The thing I found almost upsetting in it was that it felt like Superman’s morality was quite fragile. It was just based on this wish-fulfillment bulls—.”

Nevertheless, Superman’s monologue in the end, to a beaten Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), did redeem the superhero for Morrison. “They put him in a position where I was concerned that he would break down, lose his compass. The fact that he didn’t was just nice to see,” he said.

Meanwhile, James Gunn’s next Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, is expected to arrive on July 9, 2027.
