A gritty zombie trilogy is finding new life on streaming as all three films climb HBO Max’s global movie charts. The resurgence comes as the franchise prepares to debut its fourth chapter on streaming soon.
Years after redefining modern zombie horror, the film series is again pulling strong numbers, proving its bleak storytelling and intense action still connect with audiences worldwide.
28 Days, Weeks and Years Later are all streaming hits for HBO Max
The latest global HBO Max movie chart shows the zombie saga climbing fast. 28 Years Later lands at No. 4, 28 Days Later grabs the No. 6 spot, and 28 Weeks Later takes No. 8 (via FlixPatrol). The spike comes before the streaming release of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple on Netflix. The timing points to fresh hype around the franchise.
The story kicked off in 2002 with 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle and penned by Alex Garland. Cillian Murphy featured as Jim, a man who wakes from a coma to find London wrecked by a rapidly spreading Rage virus. DNA Films produced the film, and Fox Searchlight Pictures handled distribution. Critics responded strongly. The movie helped reshape zombie horror. It holds 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.5 on IMDb.
28 Weeks Later picked up the story by focusing on the fallout of the outbreak. The plot followed the U.S. military as it tried to restore order in London. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed the sequel, led by Jeremy Renner and Rose Byrne. Reviews came in a bit more divided than the first film, but the sequel still delivered solid numbers with critics and at the box office. It sits on 73% score on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.8 on IMDb.
Almost two decades later, 28 Years Later pushed the timeline even further. It explored the virus’ long-term scars and leaned back into the franchise’s dark, unforgiving mood. As a whole, the trilogy stands out for its gritty style, heavy use of practical effects, and strong emotional punch. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple pushes the saga forward in a world still ripped apart by chaos.
