Disney+ has announced the release date for the upcoming streaming debut of Tron: Ares, the latest sequel to Disney’s long-running action sci-fi franchise. Despite the negative reviews from critics, the movie still managed to catch the attention of average moviegoers, as it currently holds a Popcornmeter score of 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.
“Get ready for the electrifying action and adventure of Tron: Ares. When a highly sophisticated Program named Ares is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, it marks humankind’s first encounter with AI beings,” reads the movie’s official synopsis.
When does Tron: Ares release on Disney+?
Nearly three months after the Jared Leto-led movie was first released in theaters, Tron: Ares is now officially slated to start streaming on Disney+ on January 7, 2026. During its theatrical run, the film underperformed at the box office. It only earned a worldwide gross of over $142 million against a budget of around $180-220 million.
Tron: Areas will also be the latest film available in IMAX Enhanced on Disney+, featuring IMAX’s exclusive expanded aspect ratio for all Disney+ subscribers, ensuring that the filmmakers’ creative intent is fully preserved for a more immersive viewing experience at home. Subscribers with certified TVs and AV receivers can also experience IMAX Enhanced sound powered by DTS, featuring the full dynamic range of the original cinematic mix.
Joachim Rønning directed Tron: Ares from a screenplay written by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne. The ensemble cast includes Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, Gillian Anderson, Evan Peters, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins. It also features franchise vet Jeff Bridges, who reprised his role as Kevin Flynn, over a decade after appearing in Tron: Legacy. The film also included an electrifying original score by Nine Inch Nails.
