The rivalry continues. The post Tom Llamas Greets New ‘Nightly’ Viewers Amid ABC, CBS Struggles appeared first on ComingSoon.net - Movie Trailers, TV & Streaming News, and More.

Tom Llamas, the anchor for “NBC Nightly News” since June, is gaining ground in the ongoing battle for evening ratings. The 46-year-old newscaster replaced the 66-year-old Lester Holt as the host of the program in the summer as NBC tries to win over younger audiences, particularly in the fight for viewership against similar shows liked ABC’s “World News Tonight” anchored by David Muir. Struggles at ABC and CBS have given the advantage to Llamas who has been greeting new viewers to the program in recent weeks.
Llamas continues the battle against David Muir’s World News Tonight
Throughout November, Tom Llamas has been delivering an interesting message to his viewers on “NBC Nightly News” at the end of the program, as pointed out by Variety.
“And before we go tonight, a number of new viewers have found us in the past couple weeks,” Llamas would say, “and we want to thank them for joining us. Tonight, and always, we’re here for you.”
A portion of the new viewership could stem from issues with ABC’s “World News Tonight” not being available on YouTube TV due to a carriage dispute and a shake-up at “CBS Evening News” that is trying a new dual-anchor format.
NBC is betting on Llamas, who previously worked at ABC and was positioned as David Muir’s “heir apparent,” to target young audiences, in part by hosting the streaming program “Top Story” immediately after he finishes with his news program. This comes at a time when younger viewers prefer to use social media and other non-linear sources for the news. A September 2025 report from Pew Research shows that over 40% of adults aged 18 to 29 get their news from Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.
Llamas has since “picked up the pace of the show” in recognition that his program is “competing with the phone” for news consumption.
Still, NBC’s bet seems to be paying off so far. While “NBC Nightly News” is not beating “World News Tonight” overall, it’s had multiple wins over its competitor in the key demo of viewers between 25 and 54. This comes amid lower ad dollars being earmarked for evening-news programs, which have fallen by 6 percent between 2020 and 2024.
Tom Llamas is married to Jennifer Llamas, an executive producer at MSNBC.
