Taskmaster‘s unceremonious demise in Thunderbolts* at Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost’s hands frustrated a considerable portion of Marvel fans. Consequently, they started a trend #JusticeforTaskmaster, addressing the character’s poor utilization within the MCU and calling for her return and better treatment.
Now, nine months after the film’s release, the actress behind the masked mercenary, Olga Kurylenko, expressed her gratitude to fans for their support. Notably, the film’s marketing teased a substantial role for the character before her fate was revealed.
Olga Kurylenko is grateful for fans’ support towards Thunderbolts*’ Taskmaster
The Treason actress recently spoke with ComicBookMovie’s Josh Wilding to promote her new film, Misdirection. At the end of the discussion, Wilding asked the Ukrainian-French actress about her thoughts on the strong fan support for Taskmaster.
“It means a lot and touches my heart. I’m very grateful,” Olga Kurylenko responded. “I didn’t expect such a following or the fight they’re putting on. It’s really sweet of them.”
Kurylenko revealed that she got in touch with the person who launched the #JusticeforTaskmaster trend after she responded to one of his Instagram posts about the same. She added that she thanked him for his support, further stating, “I just thought it was really kind.”
Kurylenko’s response about the #JusticeforTaskmaster trend comes two months after she reflected on her time playing Taskmaster in Black Widow and Thunderbolts*. In an interview at the Red Sea International Film Festival, she acknowledged the character’s reduced role in the latter film. She said, “They were changing the stories, I think that [there were] too many characters. The thing is with Marvel, you never know. The superheroes die all the time, and they’re never dead.”
Kurylenko continued, “In one in one story, you disappear, suddenly you come back… I think you just never die” (via Deadline).
Last year, following Thunderbolts*’s release, familiar internet scooper MyTimetoShineHello shared a rumor. The rumor alleged that Taskmaster had a much larger role in the original story. The rumor suggested that she would clash with John Walker, form a bond with Ghost, convince Bucky Barnes to join them in stopping Val, and play a key role in the fight against Bob/Sentry.
Two months later, in an interview with Variety, Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier admitted that Taskmaster originally had a larger role in the movie. He shared that the character’s reduced role happened during script redevelopment after the SAG-AFTRA strikes. Schreier also acknowledged and expressed understanding of the fan displeasure surrounding Taskmaster’s reduced role in the film. He stressed that the decision to reduce the character’s role wasn’t done “lightly.”
