Matt Damon and Ben Affleck‘s latest collaboration, The Rip, promises a thrilling ride that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats. The Netflix thriller, drawing its roots from a compelling true story, further adds to its hype and curiosity among fans.
Is The Rip based on a true story?
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s new Netflix movie, The Rip, draws inspiration from actual events. The narrative, however, is augmented by creative liberties to enhance the storytelling.
Penned and directed by Joe Carnahan, The Rip takes viewers into the intense world of the Miami-Dade police department. The narrative unfolds as a team of officers stumbles upon a substantial cache of money in a stash house, sparking a high-stakes countdown. Bound by protocol to count the funds at the scene, the duo is acutely aware that the illicit owners will soon return. This prompts a desperate navigation of trust and loyalty amidst rising danger.
Carnahan’s connection to the true story runs deep. The director is reportedly close friends with Chris Casiano, the cop who led the team that discovered the stash (via The Wrap).
Chris Casiano led a tactical narcotics squad in Miami that stumbled upon a hefty $24 million hidden in the walls of a house. During the raid, Casiano spotted cameras in the property and sensed they were being watched.
That pivotal moment sparked the film’s narrative, although it veers off into different directions. Some details remained intact, an unmissable one being the cash-sniffing dog that went wild outside, confirming the massive haul. The dog’s strong sense of smell detected the sheer volume of cash, tipping off the team to a windfall far beyond their initial guess.
The main characters, too, have real-life counterparts. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck both spent time with Miami’s tactical narcotics teams, drawing inspiration from the real tactical narcotics police. Damon credits his character to the officer he shadowed on that trip.
Catalina Sandino Moreno also gained insight from someone involved in the real rip. The actress plays Detective Lolo Salazar, a resolute and adrenaline-driven detective in the movie.
