The Odyssey prologue is now playing in theaters ahead of special IMAX screenings for Sinners and One Battle After Another. The new footage for Christopher Nolan‘s epic movie is shaping up to be one of the cinematic events of the year.
What does The Odyssey prologue show?
In the prologue, a massive wooden horse is being dragged into Troy. Hiding inside the horse are Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, and his fellow Greek soldiers, who refuse to make a sound. When the giant horse is inside the city, a Trojan soldier stabs it with his spear, hitting one of Odysseus’ men. Just before the injured man can scream, several soldiers cover his mouth to keep him quiet.
At nightfall, the Greeks climb out of the wooden horse and attack the Trojan soldiers. After killing several Trojans, Odysseus and his men open the gate, letting in an army of Greek soldiers as they prepare to take the city. The riveting prologue ends with several action shots outside of Troy, culminating with a shot of a Cyclops.
Besides Damon, The Odyssey’s cast features Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Jon Bernthal as Menelaus, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, and Charlize Theron as Circe.
The rest of the ensemble includes Lupita Nyong’o, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Elliot Page, Samantha Morton, Bill Irwin, Shiloh Fernandez, Corey Hawkins, Nick E. Tarabay, Ryan Hurst, Jovan Adepo, James Remar, Logan Marshall-Green, and more.
Nolan writes and directs The Odyssey, based on Homer’s Greek epic of the same name. Nolan will produce with his wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas.
The Odyssey is Nolan’s first movie since 2023’s Oppenheimer, the critically acclaimed biopic that won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
Universal will release The Odyssey in theaters and IMAX on July 17, 2026.
