Veteran animator, storyboard artist, director, and playwright Roger Allers has passed away at his home in Santa Monica following a short illness. Many paid tribute to the Hollywood icon.
Roger Allers dies at 76
Roger Allen, best known for his work with Disney, died following a short illness at his home in Santa Monica, according to a Disney Animation spokesperson (via The Hollywood Reporter). He was 76 years old.
His friend and Disney colleague, Dave Bossert, first confirmed the death in an elaborate Facebook post. “I am deeply saddened by the news that our friend Roger Allers has passed on to his next journey. We were just trading emails this past week while he was traveling in Egypt, which makes this loss feel all the more unreal,” he wrote on Facebook. “Roger was an extraordinarily gifted artist and filmmaker, a true pillar of the Disney Animation renaissance,” he added. Bossert spoke about Allers’ journey in Disney and what became his defining works.
Bossert further added, “Roger had a joyful, luminous spirit, and the world is dimmer without him. Rest in peace, my friend. Until we meet again on the other side. I’m pictured with Roger in 2016 at an Academy event. I always admired his colorful sports jackets.”
Bob Iger & More Honor The Lion King Co-Director
Many prominent personalities stepped forward to pay tribute to the co-director of The Lion King. Among them was Bob Iger, the CEO of the Walt Disney Company.
“Roger Allers was a creative visionary whose many contributions to Disney will live on for generations to come,” wrote Iger in a statement, “He understood the power of great storytelling — how unforgettable characters, emotion, and music can come together to create something timeless. His work helped define an era of animation that continues to inspire audiences around the world, and we are deeply grateful for everything he gave to Disney. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and collaborators.”
Lion King producer Don Hahn also paid tribute to Allers. “Every once in a while, life puts someone in our path who helps us see more clearly,” he said. “Roger was that person for me, and for so many of us who worked with him. He was the rarest of people, endlessly curious, playful and deeply human, always eager to tell stories that reminded us of the wonder in life. He lives on in his work, and in the hearts of all of us who were lucky enough to know him.”
Allers’s work will live on for the generations to come.
