Set 24 years before the events of the first film, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping follows a young Haymitch Abernathy, a District 12 tribute who competes in the 50th Hunger Games. Haymitch will one day go on to mentor Katniss Everdeen as she prepares for the 74th Hunger Games.

What happens in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping teaser trailer?
Sunrise on the Reaping depicts the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the second Quarter Quell. Normally, each district of Panem must send two tributes to compete in the Hunger Games. In a quarter quell, each district must produce twice the number of tributes, resulting in 48 children and teenagers who must fight to the death in the arena.
Joseph Zada stars in the film as Haymitch Abernathy, a role originally played by Woody Harrelson in the first four Hunger Games movies. In Sunrise on the Reaping, Haymitch is 16 years old on the morning of the reaping.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’s ensemble includes Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee Latier, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Ben Wang as Wyatt Callow, Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, Lili Taylor as Mags Flanagan, Billy Porter as Magno Stift, Glenn Close as Drusilla Sickle, and Ralph Fiennes as President Coriolanus Snow.
Francis Lawrence directs Sunrise on the Reaping from a screenplay by Billy Ray, based on the novel by Suzanne Collins. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are producers. Cameron MacConomy will executive produce.
Sunrise on the Reaping is the sixth movie in the Hunger Games franchise and the second prequel. The first four movies followed Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen as she takes on the Capitol. 2023’s The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is a prequel to The Hunger Games and follows a young Coriolanus Snow during the 10th Hunger Games.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping opens in theaters on November 20, 2026.
