The filming window for Scarlett Johansson‘s The Exorcist has been revealed. In a recent interview, one of the film’s stars shared that production on the film would start soon, indicating things are proceeding smoothly. The update comes several months after director Mike Flanagan revealed when he planned to begin filming the horror movie.
Scarlett Johansson-led The Exorcist begins filming ‘very soon’
While speaking with Variety at the SAG-AFTRA Actors’ Awards, Jacobi Jupe, who will star alongside Scarlett Johansson in The Exorcist, revealed that principal photography would begin “very, very soon.” The young actor subsequently got specific, revealing it might start “next week.”
The Hamnet star expressed excitement at getting to work with Johansson, whose Marvel films he had seen, but said that he has yet to meet the Oscar-nominated actress. When asked if he wanted to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as she had, Jupe replied that it depended on the role he got.
Besides Johansson and Jupe, the film will star Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
The film was originally reportedly scheduled for March 13, 2026. However, it is now coming out on March 12, 2027. Mike Flanagan earlier confirmed on a Tumblr post in June 2025 that the film wouldn’t make it to its March 2026 date and that production wouldn’t begin until he wrapped up his work on Prime Video’s Carrie. However, he assured fans that things were going smoothly and that they had “nothing to worry about.”
Universal Pictures has reportedly labeled the film a “radical redo.” It will tell a new story disconnected from previous films in The Exorcist franchise, including The Exorcist: Believer.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter last year, Flanagan revealed that he pursued the film “very aggressively.” This was due to his certainty in bringing a fresh perspective to the franchise.
“This is an opportunity to do something that I believe has never been done within the franchise — something that honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia,” he explained. ” I really just saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made. I know expectations are high. No one’s more intimidated than I am.”
Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Morgan Creek Entertainment are co-producing the film with Red Room Pictures. David Robinson, Jason Blum, and Flanagan are producers on the movie. Meanwhile, Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek serve as executive producers.
