New details have come up about the highly anticipated Call of Duty movie, straight from a top Xbox Game Studios boss. He has revealed how the project came to life and why its acclaimed writer is the perfect fit.
What did Matt Booty say about Taylor Sheridan’s Call of Duty movie?
As Xbox heads toward its 25th anniversary in 2026, the company is gearing up for what Matt Booty, President of Game Content and Studios at Microsoft, calls a “banner year.” One of them is the first-ever Call of Duty movie, spearheaded by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and produced by Paramount. Booty explained that the partnership originated organically from within the Call of Duty development team itself, rather than from a corporate mandate.
“A relationship came about between the folks at Paramount and the senior people on the ‘Call of Duty’ team. Where they felt like they found a partner who understands the game, people who play the game, and shared a vision of what it could be to bring that forward,” Booty told Variety. He emphasized that these adaptations “start with the game team,” ensuring creative alignment from the ground up.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, Booty shared confidence in Sheridan’s vision. “If you think about the way that he tells stories… I think that the team feels that he’s got a good approach to characters and a good approach to story that’ll match up with their vision of what a ‘Call of Duty’ movie [is],” Booty said.
Furthermore, addressing the challenge of adapting a franchise with two decades of history, Booty drew a parallel to the successful Fallout TV show. “Where do you start? ‘Call of Duty,’ there’s two decades of ‘Call of Duty’ — where do you start? Which character do you pick?… And so the team has got a vision where they want to go, and I think Taylor Sheridan will be a good match for what they’ve got in mind.”
This film joins other key Xbox adaptations in the works, including the Minecraft movie sequel and Netflix’s Gears of War projects.
