Stranger Things Season 5 finale includes a touching tribute to a fan-favorite character introduced and killed off in Season 4: Joseph Quinn‘s Eddie Munson. Munson’s demise at the end of Season 4 not only left fans devastated but also greatly affected Gaten Matarazzo’s Dustin Henderson.
For a good portion of Season 5, Dustin struggled with Eddie’s absence, reflected in his moody demeanor and appearance modeled after Eddie, which includes a mullet hairstyle and a Hellfire Club t-shirt.
How Stranger Things Season 5 finale paid tribute to Eddie Munson
In the Stranger Things Season 5 finale, Dustin gives a valedictorian graduation speech where he honors his friends sitting in the crowd and notes how the danger posed by Vecna and the Upside Down is over.
However, he quickly changes the tone of his speech when he removes his graduation robes and reveals a Hellfire Club t-shirt. Subsequently, Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper” starts playing as Dustin says, “Screw the school. Screw the system. Screw conforming. This is our year!” while Principal Higgins tries to stop him and his friends, and everyone in the crowd cheers for him.
Dustin then takes his diploma from Higgins, gives him the middle finger, and runs away. His actions are what Eddie intended to do at his unfulfilled graduation. In Season 4, Eddie told Dustin, Mike, and the Hellfire Club members, “I’m gonna walk that stage next month, I’m gonna look Principal Higgins dead in the eye, I’m gonna flip him the bird, I’m gonna snatch that diploma, and I’m gonna run like hell.”
As fans know, Eddie behaved in a way that didn’t conform to the school’s rigid rules, making him an eyesore among many of his peers, including his rival, Jason Carver.
The finale also includes another Easter egg tied to Eddie. Before fighting Vecna, Dustin gives Steve a modified garbage lid shield and weapon originally used by Eddie.
Fans react to Stranger Things Season 5 finale’s Eddie Easter egg
Fans had a plethora of reactions to the Stranger Things Season 5 finale’s tribute to Eddie. “Yes. It was so Eddie. Perfect,” one user remarked on Reddit. “Absolute amazing tribute to Eddie the Banished,” another added.
Yet another user commented, “I have 4 kids and was watching the last episode on my phone as everyone else in the house had the tv and had to go to the bathroom to cry like a baby at the ending.”
“If I could scream and cry violently to express how this makes me feel it would alarm my neighbors, gonna journal about it instead,” a user shared.
