Stranger Things Season 5 premiered over the Thanksgiving holiday, releasing the first four episode of the highly anticipated final season of the hit Netflix series. In a shocking move, the Duffer Brothers also brought back a surprise character and look to be trying to fix one of Stranger Things’ most criticized moments.
What character is brought back in Stranger Things Season 5?

In the fourth episode of Stranger Things Season 5, “Chapter Four: Sorcerer,” Hopper (David Harbour) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) are en route to a military compound stationed inside the Upside Down, having made their way in during the previous three episodes.
So far in Season 5 so far, Eleven found a secret room inside the compound she believes housed Vecna captured by the mysterious Dr. Kay (Linda Hamilton). The fourth episode shows her and Hopper breaking their way in, finally revealing the person held captive in the room.
To the shock of probably every Stranger Things fan, the person inside wasn’t Vecna at all, but Kali (Linnea Berthelsen), the only other surviving child test subjects from Hawkins Lab and someone briefly introduced in Season 2 of the show. While we don’t exactly know why Kali has been captured, how long she’s been imprisoned, or what exactly her story will be throughout the final eight episodes of the show, her return has shocked fans.
Kali, who is tattooed with an “008” and nicknamed “Eight,” first appeared in Season 2 of Stranger Things in a story arc that featured Stranger Things’ most controversial episode. The episode in question, “Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister,” takes place totally away from Hawkins and is set in Chicago. The episode is largely about Eleven tracking down Kali, joining her makeshift gang, and finding a sister with similar trauma in the process.
The episode was largely criticized upon its release, as many saw it as a total shift from the series so far. Many wondered if it was made solely as a “backdoor pilot,” an episode in a TV series that often acts as a proposed spin-off, due to how removed from the series it seems to be. Bringing her back now seems to squash that idea, though, and offers closure to not only that episode, but Eleven’s entire backstory as a whole.
While it’s unknown what Kali’s story will be going forward, it seems like she’s not only back, but will play a large role in the rest of Season 5. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Matt Duffer said that Kali’s story was “this loose end that we had never really resolved. We’ve talked about bringing her back before, but there was not a narrative or thematic reason to bring her back.”
Duffer also said that Kali will be “very important” to what Eleven does in Season 5, as well as the group’s chances of defeating Vecna as a whole. Given the fact that Kali has seemingly been used to try and track Vecna for some time, she’ll be a valuable member of the team going forward, and may even get to redeem herself amongst fans who had already written her off.
