As anticipation builds for Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2, the show’s creators are offering new details about the significance of Kali’s unexpected return. Matt Duffer says her reappearance will bring shift in Eleven’s journey and also influence the tone and direction of the upcoming episodes.
Matt Duffer says ‘Kali shifts things a lot for Eleven’ in Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2
Duffer is preparing audiences for a significant shift in Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2. He confirmed that Kali’s sudden reappearance will have major influence on Eleven. Speaking to SFX magazine, he explained that her presence changes the direction of the upcoming episodes.
Duffer said, “It will be a very different dynamic going into the second volume,” adding that her role introduces a change in tone and creates new tension. The creator explained, “Kali shifts things a lot for Eleven, and I think it’ll be surprising for people to see how she ultimately fits into the story. We’re excited about that, because it immediately changes the tone. And obviously, the way things ended with Hopper leaves a lot of tension between them.”
Kali was introduced in an episode focused entirely on Eleven’s time away from Hawkins. She was one of the many children subjected to experimentation at Hawkins Lab. Identified as Eight, she possesses abilities equal to or even stronger than Eleven’s. Duffer noted that the creative team had long wanted to bring her back.
“We were working on season five, and we were talking about making sure every storyline was finished. It was always nagging at us that the Kali storyline was hanging. So it was important to revisit it and complete her arc,” the showrunner said. Season 5 pushes her story further by revealing that Dr. Kay, played by Linda Hamilton, has been holding Kali inside the Upside Down.
Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 1 is now available to stream on Netflix. Volume 2 is scheduled to premiere on December 25.
