The Duffer brothers revealed that Finn Wolfhard had accurately guessed their secret spin off idea, as they offered a new update on the developing Stranger Things project. Matt and Ross Duffer outlined where the spin off currently stands. They noted how the series is progressing as they transition toward their upcoming work at Paramount.
The Duffer brothers reveal that new Stranger Things spin-off is moving forward
Matt and Ross Duffer told Deadline that the new Stranger Things spin off is officially moving forward, with Matt opening, “We are moving forward with it. Netflix, they finally know what it is.” He added that Finn Wolfhard had once correctly guessed the concept, saying, “Finn guessed what it was. So he was the only one who knew.” Ross said Wolfhard’s memory may have shifted, noting, “Last time he brought it up, I was like, ‘That’s not what it is.’”
The brothers said the spin off has been in development since Season 4 in 2022 and is underway at Netflix. Matt said, “Everybody at Netflix knows. They’re very excited behind it there,” adding that they have assembled a team he cannot yet disclose. He also said, “We’re trying to get it to go pretty quickly.” Wolfhard had previously suggested to Variety that the project might resemble Twin Peaks with an anthology format and a mythology tied to the Upside Down. Matt noted that this did not represent the actual idea.
In October, the Duffers said the project will start with “a clean slate” and “new characters.” Matt said, “The spinoff idea is something that Ross and I came up with that we’re extremely excited about. It’s quite different, though, than Stranger Things.” They said they will remain closely involved even as they begin their four year film and TV deal with Paramount in 2026. Ross confirmed that future work will not be set in the ’80s, stating, “Whatever we do next… it’s not going to be set in the ’80s.”
The Duffers continue to executive produce upcoming Netflix projects including The Boroughs and Something Very Bad Is Going To Happen. Ross said their storytelling style will carry into future work, adding, “We’ll shake it up a little bit.”
