With the ‘Byler’ fandom, an online Stranger Things community that has rallied for a romantic relationship between characters Mike Wheeler and Will Byers for a long time, gaining much traction in recent years, the creators of the Netflix show have clarified their stance on the same following the much-awaited Season 5 finale. In a recent discussion, Matt Duffer, the co-creator of Stranger Things, finally revealed whether the notions of the said internet group had any influence on the plot of the series.
Matt Duffer chose ‘to block’ the Byler theories while writing Stranger Things Season 5
The Stranger Things co-creator disclosed that despite the popularity of the ‘Byler’ fandom, it did not influence the storyline of Season 5 one bit.
“For us, there’s always noise,” Matt Duffer said while speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub. “But when we sit down to write a season, the goal is — I mean, you have to block it out, and you have to tell the story that you are always intending to tell.”
Notably, the ‘Byler’ fandom refers to a group of fans who were convinced that Stranger Things had long been building the relationship between Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Will (Noah Schnapp) to culminate on a romantic note. Such theories gained even more momentum after Season 5, Episode 7. It sees Will finally admit his crush on Mike during his coming out scene in front of his friends.
Nevertheless, the speculations did little to faze the Duffer brothers, who had charted out how Will’s arc would end years ago. “This story and the story of Will has been planned and has been building to this moment for eight years now,” Matt Duffer noted. “So, that’s all we really wanted to do, was to just be truthful to what we wanted to do and what we’d always been planning to.”
In accordance, Stranger Things came to an end with a two-hour finale without Will and Mike sparking a romantic relationship. Instead, the duo doubles down on the depth of their friendship. Meanwhile, Mike continues his long-established relationship with Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven.
