Stephen Colbert reacted to Donald Trump’s latest Iran war speech humorously during his monologue on The Late Show, offering a reaction that not only caught his audience’s attention but was, in a way, the opposite of the views he has held so far for the president.
Stephen Colbert ‘praises’ Donald Trump’s speech on April Fools’ Day
During his Wednesday monologue on The Late Show, Stephen Colbert jokingly described Donald Trump’s address as “concise, intelligent, and brought the nation together with shared purpose.” For a brief moment, it sounded like rare praise. But the comedian then paused, laughed, and delivered the punchline, saying, “April Fools’!”
The audience, however, had already caught on even before he revealed it. Colbert leaned into the timing of the speech, which fell on April 1, to frame his reaction. Then, the host pointed out that the Iran war speech happened on the first night of Passover. Quipping, he further said, “So, whether you’re Jewish or not, I recommend having had four glasses of wine.”
Stephen Colbert then admitted he hadn’t actually watched the speech, explaining that he was filming before it aired. But, he added another joke, saying he “put lamb’s blood on my TV, so the speech would pass me by.”
Donald Trump’s speech was his first national address since the Iran War began. Speaking from the White House for about 19 minutes, he said that “core strategic objectives are nearing completion.” He also signaled further escalation, stating the U.S. would “hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks.” Trump went on to add, “We are going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong.” The president also suggested that U.S. troops could wrap up their mission soon (via The White House).
Colbert’s reaction fits into his broader coverage of the Iran war, which he has addressed in recent episodes. In earlier monologues, he spoke about rising gas prices and shifting messaging around the war, using humor to speak about the situation.
