The upcoming theatrical rerelease of Star Wars, also known as Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope and Star Wars: A New Hope, has received some great news.
Earlier this year, Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: A New Hope would be rereleased in theaters in 2026 in honor of the 1977 film’s 50th anniversary. The rerelease was dated for April 30, 2027.
What is the update on the rerelease of Star Wars: A New Hope?
Now, per the official Star Wars website, Lucasfilm and Disney have moved up the rerelease date to February 19, 2027. No other movie currently has that release date, though Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation’s Cocomelon: The Movie arrives the week after.
Additionally, the Star Wars website notes that the version of Star Wars that will be rereleased in theaters is the “1977 original” rather than the controversial 1997 Special Edition.
Often regarded as one of the great and most influential movies of all time, Star Wars is written and directed by George Lucas. It stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia Organa, Peter Cushing as Grand Moff Tarkin, Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi, Anthony Daniels as C3PO, Kenny Baker as R2-D2, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca, and David Prowse and James Earl Jones as Darth Vader.
“The Imperial Forces — under orders from cruel Darth Vader — hold Princess Leia hostage, in their efforts to quell the rebellion against the Galactic Empire,” reads the movie’s official synopsis. “Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, captain of the Millennium Falcon, work together with the companionable droid duo R2-D2 and C-3PO to rescue the beautiful princess, help the Rebel Alliance, and restore freedom and justice to the Galaxy.”
A New Hope won’t be the only Star Wars movie that fans get to see in 2027, either, as Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter is currently dated for May 28, 2027. That film stars Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Matt Smith, Amy Adams, and more.
