Michael Rosenbaum shared a new update on the status of the proposed Smallville revival series during a recent convention appearance. The former Lex Luthor actor outlined the current stage of development and clarified the factors that are preventing the animated continuation from moving forward.
Michael Rosenbaum gives Smallville revival series update
Michael Rosenbaum provided an update on the status of the proposed Smallville animated revival while appearing at Comic Con Liverpool.
He stated that initial development work has taken place, saying, “We did some artwork and Al Gough and Miles Miller, who created Smallville, they’re attached. And Tom Welling and I wanna do it, but it’s gotta be the right time, when you pitch.”
Rosenbaum added that multiple factors remain unresolved, including studio approval, noting, “You have to make sure that the studio is wanting to do something like that right now.” He confirmed that the team intends to involve returning cast members if the project proceeds and described the effort as “a work in progress.”
The animated continuation was first discussed publicly in 2021 following the end of the original series in 2011. The concept involves Tom Welling voicing Clark Kent in a continuation of the character’s story. Rosenbaum stated that the creators and cast remain involved and that the project requires studio approval before moving forward.
In 2024, Welling said that progress depended entirely on securing approval from DC. He explained, “We have already got an artist and we have a poster, and we haven’t been able to share it yet, but Lionel Luthor is looming over everybody, and it is really cool” (via CBR).
He added, “We can’t do anything without DC saying we can do it, and they haven’t given us the green light, but we are ready. Al and Miles who wrote Smallville want to write it, but it is not our property until they say we can do it.” Welling’s comments aligned with Rosenbaum’s update that the team continues development while awaiting formal authorization.
