Amid growing anticipation, Severance is making progress toward its long-awaited third season, with production expected to begin sometime in the coming months. As Apple shifts the series in-house, new details have emerged about its future, including plans for additional seasons and possible franchise expansions.
New report claims Severance Season 3 can potentially begin filming in summer
Deadline reports that “Apple hopes to start shooting in the summer,” though the timing remains tentative and may shift depending on script completion.
The writers have finished six scripts for Season 3, outlined episode seven, and continue developing the remaining scripts. Executive producer/director Ben Stiller and creator/showrunner Dan Erickson aim to finalize all scripts before production starts to avoid expensive shutdowns or reshoots, which impacted Season 2.
Apple purchased Severance and all associated rights from Fifth Season in a deal reportedly worth just under $70 million. Apple’s in-house Apple Studios will now produce the series, while Fifth Season will stay on as executive producer. This move follows a similar transition with Silo, which Apple acquired from AMC Studios.
Season 2 of Severance faced significant production challenges, including an eight-and-a-half-month shutdown due to Hollywood strikes, changes in the writers’ room, and costly reshoots. These issues contributed to Fifth Season seeking financial assistance and ultimately selling the rights to Apple.
Kogonada will direct the upcoming season after previously serving as producing director on Pachinko. Apple intends to continue its strategy of producing high-end original content in-house with Season 3 of Severance. Apple Studios is targeting a four-season run, while Stiller and Erickson will decide whether to pursue a fifth season or expand the franchise through prequels, spinoffs, or international versions.
Fifth Season will earn producing fees going forward. By acquiring the show, Apple gains more flexibility in budgeting and greater control over production scheduling. Season 3 will continue filming in New York, where the series benefits from tax credits.
