Sean Penn joined a small group of artists who did not attend the Oscars despite winning an award at the ceremony this week, but the actor received a different “Oscar” style trophy while visiting Ukraine. Penn reportedly did not attend the Academy Awards because he had prior commitments to visit Ukraine. The country honored Penn with an award that resembled the Oscar trophy. However, it was made from rail metal damaged during the war.

Sean Penn became one of the few major figures in Oscars history to not attend the ceremony despite winning a major award. The actor won the Best Supporting Actor award. It was for his role in the Paul Thomas Anderson film One Battle After Another.
However, the actor reportedly had prior commitments to visit Ukraine during the ceremony. Therefore, he did not attend the ceremony to collect the award, which is an uncommon occurrence in the industry.
To acknowledge this, Ukraine gifted Penn an Oscar-shaped award made from rail metal damaged during the war (via BBC). In a video posted by Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, CEO of Ukrainian Railways, he can be seen telling Sean Penn, “You’re missing Oscars… So we made this one. This is from the railcar that was damaged by the Russians.”
The 65-year-old actor has been a long-term supporter of Ukraine. He has made several visits to the country since Russia started its full-scale invasion. To show his solidarity, Penn even gifted one of his previous Oscars to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Before winning the Best Supporting Actor award at the Oscars this year, Penn had previously won two Best Actor awards for Mystic River (2004) and Milk (2009).
