Scream 7 just had its biggest domestic box office opening in the franchise’s 30-year history, obliterating previous records. The Paramount and Spyglass Media slasher didn’t just dominate its own legacy; it screamed past Sony’s animated holdover and Warner Bros.’ literary adaptation.

Scream 7 debuts with biggest domestic opening

The seventh installment, directed by original franchise writer Kevin Williamson, collected $64.1 million domestically from 3,540 theaters, easily surpassing Scream VI’s previous franchise record of $44.4 million from 2023. Combined with $33.1 million from international markets, Scream 7’s global box office opening stands at $97.2 million, which is another franchise best.

The return of Neve Campbell as iconic final girl Sidney Prescott has added to the film’s success, following her absence from the sixth entry due to a salary dispute. Legacy cast members Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Matthew Lillard also returned, tapping into nostalgia while attracting younger viewers. According to PostTrak data, 77% of the audience was between 18 to 44 years old. Additionally, premium large formats drove 40% of domestic grosses, with the film playing in IMAX for the first time in franchise history. IMAX contributed $7.1 million globally.

Internationally, Scream 7 collected $33.1 million from 52 markets, representing 90% of its overseas footprint and marking a 35% increase over Scream VI in like-for-like markets. The United Kingdom led all territories with a franchise-best $5.3 million, followed by France ($4.2 million), Mexico ($3 million), Australia ($2.5 million), and Germany ($2.4 million). The film has yet to open in Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong.

Sony’s Goat continues respectable box office run

While Scream 7 dominated the weekend box office, holdovers continued posting solid numbers. Sony’s original animated adventure GOAT added $12 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $73.9 million and its worldwide cumulative total to $130.5 million. The $80 million production faces increased competition next weekend with the release of Disney and Pixar’s Hoppers.

Wuthering Heights closes in on major milestone

Warner Bros.’ literary adaptation Wuthering Heights, directed by Emerald Fennell, grossed $6.95 million in its third frame, pushing its domestic total to $72.3 million and international haul to $119.7 million from 78 territories. The $80 million production now stands at $192 million worldwide, closing in on the $200 million milestone and continuing Warner Bros.’ strong box office streak following hits like Sinners, A Minecraft Movie, and Weapons last year (via Deadline and Variety).
