Sarah Michelle Gellar has finally addressed the recent Buffy the Vampire Slayer report regarding the first character details for the upcoming Hulu reboot. At the moment, the franchise vet is the only confirmed cast member for the revival.
Based on the iconic supernatural drama series, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival will be written and directed by Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman, who are also set to serve as showrunners. Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao is also attached to direct and executive produce, alongside Gellar, Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzi, and Dolly Parton. It is a production by 20th Television and Searchlight Television.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer star clarifies rumors about reboot’s main character
During a recent interview, Gellar officially debunked the three character leaks that were previously revealed last March, including the rumored Willow-type protaganist named Nova.
“Those are all fake characters,” Gellar clarified. “That thing that got released is all fake.”
In addition, Gellar also opened up about Zhao’s moving pitch, confirming that she had been working closely with the creative team for nearly four years in order to make the project right.
“Every pitch I heard was just like, ‘Let’s just do Buffy again.’ Why?” Gellar recalled. “But the passion that [Zhao] came to me with, what she wanted to do with the show and the character, and why Buffy is needed now – it was the first time where I thought, ‘OK, there’s a reason.'”
“We’ve been at this for three-and-a-half, maybe four years now,” she continued. “We won’t do it unless it’s 100% right and there’s 100% a reason.”

Created by Joss Whedon, the original show lasted for seven seasons from 1997-2003. It revolved around the misadventures of Sarah Michelle Gellar’s titular character, who juggles the desire to live a normal high-school life with her responsibilities of being a proficient hunter of demons and vampires.
