Robert De Niro has issued a statement following an interview in which his daughter, Airyn, came out as transgender, expressing love and support for her.

What did De Niro say about his daughter?

In a statement issued to Deadline, De Niro said that he’s always loved Airyn, first as his son, and now as his daughter. To the legendary actor, he said he doesn’t understand why there is a “big deal” about it at all.

“I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is . . . I love all my children,” De Niro said.

The statement comes after Airyn — the child of De Niro and actress and model Toukie Smith — discussed their transition in an interview with Them. In the interview, Airyn talks about how, after being misrepresented by media coverage, she felt it necessary to finally allow herself to be visible.

“There’s a difference between being visible and being seen,” Airyn said. “I’ve been visible. I don’t think I’ve been seen yet.”

De Niro also briefly spoke about her parents and their involvement in her childhood. While she admitted they weren’t perfect, she is grateful they elected to keep her out of the limelight as much as possible.

“Obviously no parent is perfect, but I am grateful that both my parents agreed to keep me out of the limelight. They wanted it very private,” Airyn said. “They have told me they wanted me to have as much of a normal childhood as possible.”

Following the interview, Airyn began receiving support on social media. Actress Laverne Cox, who Airyn noted was an inspiration to her, took to Instagram to share a message to Airyn.
