Rian Johnson, who directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, revealed an exciting update about his new sci-fi movie.
What did Rian Johnson say about his sci-fi movie?
While promoting Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Johnson revealed plans for his next movie during an interview with Variety. He’s previously discussed the subject of the movie, which will resemble a 1970s thriller.
“The most exciting thing right now is this idea I have in my head for the next thing I’m gonna make, and I think ultimately, that’s all you can do, is just kind of follow your nose,” Johnson said. “If I had to define it genre-wise, I’d say it harkens back to the ’70s paranoid thrillers. It’s got a light sci-fi element to it.”
Johnson is currently writing the original script, and he plans to shoot it in 2026.
Johnson’s next Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man, is now playing in limited theaters before it heads to Netflix on December 12, 2025. Daniel Craig reprises his role as Detective Benoit Blanc, who investigates a murder at a church. The ensemble includes Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.
As for Star Wars, Johnson’s The Last Jedi is one of the franchise’s most polarizing movies. Despite the divided reaction, The Last Jedi still grossed $1.3 billion worldwide.
Following The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm hired Johnson to write a new Star Wars trilogy. Unfortunately, those plans are effectively dead. However, Johnson isn’t willing to say goodbye to Star Wars just yet.
“A part of my brain will always be in Star Wars,” Johnson said. “It’s so much a part of me and the way I think.”
