Invincible showrunners Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa addressed one of Season 4’s most talked-about character changes ahead of the show’s ongoing Viltrumite War arc. The creators explained why they chose to gender swap one of the comic’s most beloved teenage heroes.
Invincible showrunners explain why Tech Jacket is a woman
Invincible Season 4 introduces Tech Jacket as Zoe Thompson, voiced by Zoey Deutch, instead of the comic’s male character Zack Thompson. Co-showrunner Robert Kirkman explained the gender swap to Den of Geek with a straightforward reason.
“When it came time to introduce Tech Jacket, I realized that if we had brought him straight to comics, he’d be very similar to Mark,” Kirkman said. “We decided early on that it would be interesting to gender swap this character. We started thinking about who Zoe would be instead of Zach. There are some exciting things that come up when you change that character.”
Tech Jacket first appeared in a self-titled 2001 comic written by Kirkman and penciled by E.J. Su. The character expanded the Invincible universe through the war between the Gelderians and their enemies, the Kresh. Zoe joins the animated series during the Viltrumite War arc.
Kirkman praised Deutch’s performance directly. “The vibrancy of that character and the energy that she brings is so much more affecting coming from Zoey Deutch. She’s just a really, really cool character that we’re having a ton of fun with.”
Co-showrunner Simon Racioppa also spoke about casting Deutch in the role. “She came in and knew the character. She’s so professional and fun to work with, and she has a great sense of humor, because the character is fun. They go through things, but she has great jokes, great one-liners, and Zoey just delivers on all that. We could not be more delighted when we cast her for the show.”
Zoe makes her full debut in Season 4, Episode 5, defeating The Order’s Walking Dread before unmasking.
New episodes of Invincible stream Wednesdays on Prime Video.
