Percy Jackson Season 2 introduces a new activities director, Tantalus. While fans of the book and Greek mythology enthusiasts may be familiar with him, the show-only viewers are wondering who this new character is.
So, here is a brief history of Tantalus.
Camp Half Blood’s new activities director Tantalus in Percy Jackson explained
Just like most mythological figures referenced in the Percy Jackson franchise, Tantalus is a figure from Greek mythology. He is known for enduring one of the most severe punishments in the Underworld. In the show, however, he replaced Chiron as the new activities director with very little explanation.
Tantalus was first introduced in Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Sea of Monsters, the second book in the franchise. In the book, he is a former mortal king punished in the Fields of Punishment and temporarily served as Camp Half-Blood’s activities director when Chiron was accused of poisoning Thalia’s Pine Tree. However, in the show, the story never reached that point. Instead, Zeus “decrees” that he be appointed purely because he is a descendant of Kronos (via ScreenRant).
In Greek mythology, Tantalus was once a mortal king whom Zeus offered a place at the table among the gods at Olympus. The former king wanted to bring back nectar and ambrosia to his land. However, the gods denied his request.
As a revenge for this humiliation, Tantalus killed and cooked Zeus’s son, Pelops, and then tried to feed him to the gods. All but one god immediately figured out what was in their food. Overcome with anger, Zeus used his Master Bolt to kill Tantalus and took his soul to Hades in the Underworld. There, Hades punished him with eternal starvation and placed him in a pool of water beneath a fruit tree. Despite his many efforts, he could never drink or eat.
This is just one of the stories from the various versions of the myth. Nonetheless, it all ends with him having resentment towards the gods. And when Zeus appoints him as the activities director, he channels his frustration towards the students in Camp Half-Blood. He especially has deep animosity toward Percy Jackson since the gods favor him despite his rebellious nature, which extends to his friends, Annabeth and Tyson.
The first two episodes of Percy Jackson Season 2 are streaming on Disney+.
