Paradise stunned viewers in Season 2 when a key character died in Episode 4 while giving birth. The twist came just weeks after the premiere centered entirely on her character, making fans believe she would stay for the long haul. Now, executive producer John Hoberg says that was not always the plan.

Shailene Woodley’s Annie almost lived longer in Paradise Season 2
Hoberg told The Direct that killing off Annie, played by Shailene Woodley, was not locked in from the beginning. “The intention wasn’t necessarily to kill her off at that point,” he said. Early discussions included versions of the story where Annie survived and remained part of the series longer. “There was a lot of discussion earlier where Annie was around, and she didn’t die,” he added.
However, as the writers shaped the season, they shifted focus to Xavier, played by Sterling K. Brown. Hoberg described the show as a kind of Western, built around a single-minded lead with a strong moral code. The writers test that code again and again. Annie’s death became part of that test. “There was this realization that we really needed to take something from him,” Hoberg explained.
Xavier wants to rebuild his family in a broken world. By losing Annie in such a vulnerable moment, he experiences the pain of a shattered family firsthand. Hoberg stressed, “There was a method behind it, versus we just want to hurt you.” The emotional logic ties back to Annie’s own fears. She struggles to trust others in the new world. Xavier believes people are good at heart. Her final moments force him to prove that belief when he must ask strangers for help. That tension, Hoberg said, deepened the story.
The decision echoes Season 1, when Billy’s death also surprised the team. Hoberg credited series creator Dan Fogelman for staying true to character. “If this is what a character needs to go through, they’re going to go through it,” he said. For Annie, that meant a heartbreaking exit.
