Will Gluck's One Night Only debuts with disappointing reactions. The post One Night Only Audiences Hate the Movie’s Premise, But Say One Thing Nearly Saves It appeared first on ComingSoon.net - Movie Trailers, TV & Streaming News, and More.

Director Will Gluck‘s new romantic comedy movie, One Night Only, has made its debut in theaters. The early reactions from audiences and critics are heavily divided. As of writing, the movie holds a 47% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes from 104 reviews.
While the movie’s unusual premise has drawn mixed-to-negative reactions, Monica Barbaro‘s charming, light-touch performance received widespread acclaim. Some viewers even admitted that she is the reason the movie works at all. Her chemistry with co-star Callum Turner also earned praise, even from reactions that were otherwise lukewarm on everything else surrounding it.
Set in an alternate reality where premarital sex is illegal except for one 12-hour window a year, it follows two New Yorkers trying to find out a connection during this chaotic night.
A clever setup couldn’t overcome the movie’s uneven storytelling
Many viewers agreed that One Night Only had an intriguing idea but struggled to build a story around it.
@AnAntLife on X called it “a sexless ‘sex comedy'” and praised the movie’s world-building. However, they felt the execution lacked the punch and said Monica was the only standout among the cast. @FilmReviews280 also said the movie concept was “fun” but disappoints both in “dialogue and order of scene”.
Another X user, @E_insiderX, said the movie is “the weirdest rom-com of 2026” and comes with a “wild premise.” They also added the studio held reviews until the release date, a move that often indicates the film “fell flat on its premise.”
@FlickMythRob also struggled with the movie’s fictional setting, writing, “There isn’t a single scene… that didn’t fill me with questions about this world,” before criticizing its ending. @caonfilm described the movie as “what happens when a rom-com and a dystopian ‘what if?’ have a very chaotic baby.” However, the review also mentions they had a fun time watching it, praising Monica and Turner’s performance as they were “ridiculously charming.”
How One Night Only performs at the box office remains to be seen given its mixed reception. Overall, the early reception points out that the latest rom-com features a memorable lead and performance, but its ambitious premise wasn’t enough to win over the audience.
