The upcoming Marvel series, Spider-Noir, has already broken new ground for Spider-Man. The live-action project has been assigned the highest age rating ever given to a television series focused on the iconic superhero. The development highlights a meaningful shift in tone for the franchise, most often associated with family-friendly programming.
Spider-Noir creates new Marvel history
Marvel’s upcoming live-action Spider-Noir series has officially received a TV-14 rating in the United States, making it the highest age classification ever assigned to a Spider-Man television project. The rating shows a notable evolution in tone for Spider-Man projects.
Earlier adaptations consistently fell within lower rating brackets. The live-action The Amazing Spider-Man was classified TV-PG, as were animated titles such as Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends and Spider-Man. More recent installments have continued to target younger demographics. Spidey and His Amazing Friends carries a TV-Y rating, highlighting its preschool audience, while Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is rated TV-PG.
In contrast, Spider-Noir moves into more mature territory. Although it does not reach the TV-MA classification associated with adult-oriented productions such as Prime Video’s popular superhero series, The Boys, the TV-14 rating indicates stronger language, more intense action, and darker thematic material than any previous Spider-Man television installment. Early promotional material has hinted at themes involving violence, psychological strain, and references to alcoholism, which may have contributed to the higher ratings.
The show stars Nicolas Cage, who previously voiced the character in animation and now brings him to life in live action. This version of Spider-Man is portrayed as a private investigator pulled back into action. The series’ cast also includes Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, and Brendan Gleeson.
Spider-Noir is set to premiere on MGM+ in the United States and on Prime Video worldwide on May 25, 2026. With its TV-14 rating, the series’ shift in tone may set a new standard for Spider-Man stories on television.
