A 2015 movie that inspired a 2022 Tom Hanks remake is officially available on Netflix today, allowing fans to check out a brand new comedy-drama.

What movie that inspired a Tom Hanks remake is on Netflix today?

The 2015 film A Man Called Ove, which itself is based on the 2012 book from Swedish writer Fredrik Backman, is now available on Netflix. The movie follows the story of a grieving widower who plans to kill himself before meeting a family that eventually leads to him finding a new purpose in life.

The movie inspired a 2022 English adaptation, titled A Man Called Otto, that starred Tom Hanks and was directed by Marc Foster. That film was also a success, grossing more than $110 million at the global box office, and receiving mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike.

A Man Called Ove is directed by Hannes Holm, and stars Rolf Lassgård, Bahar Pars, Filip Berg, and Ida Engvoll. The movie was a massive success in Sweden, and as of 2023, was Sweden’s third most-watched theatrical film in the country of all time.

“Ove is the quintessential angry old man next door. An isolated retiree with strict principles and a short fuse, who spends his days enforcing block association rules that only he cares about, and visiting his wife’s grave, Ove has given up on life. After a boisterous young family moves in next door and accidentally flattens Ove’s mailbox, an unlikely friendship forms,” reads the official synopsis of the film.
