The upcoming Monopoly Netflix TV show has gotten its first details, revealing what fans can expect from the show based on the iconic board game.
What do we know about the Monopoly Netflix TV show?
According to a new report from Deadline, Studio Lambert has acquired the rights to the show. The studio, which is also behind Peacock’s hit game show The Traitors, will produce the show for Netflix. The report mentions that Netflix was pleased with Studio Lambert’s originality in its pitch, and chose them over a number of other studios.
While little is known about the upcoming show, Netflix VP of unscripted series Jeff Gaspin told Deadline that the inspiration for acquiring the rights to a Monopoly show came from the hit 2023 mobile game Monopoly Go!
“There’s a gameplay in Monopoly Go! that I think really will resonate with gameplay in an unscripted series,” Gaspin said. It’s unclear just what type of gameplay the show will feature, however, so fans will have to wait for more information.
Alongside the Netflix show, Monopoly is also going to be appearing in the movies soon. In 2024, Lionsgate was said to be moving forward with a movie based on the board game. Margot Robbie is said to be attached to the project in a producer role, alongside Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara.
This isn’t the first time that studios have attempted to do something with the Monopoly brand, either. Back in 2008, when the film rights to the game were still at Universal Pictures, the company tried to produce a movie adaptation with Ridley Scott previously attached to direct. However, it was eventually scrapped after the right reverted back to Hasbro.
In 2015, Lionsgate announced that they’re developing an action adventure film based on the said game with Andrew Niccol initially slated to pen the screenplay. The project was ultimately abandoned after no updates were released about it. In 2019, it was reported that Kevin Hart has signed on to lead and produce an untitled Monopoly movie. It remains unclear if Hart is still attached to the project or if the upcoming adaptation from Lionsgate and Hasbro would be a new iteration.
