The Miami Vice reboot release date has been set, with the new film from director Joseph Kosinski officially getting new information.
When is the Miami Vice reboot release date?
According to a new report from Variety, the Miami Vice reboot will release in theaters sometime in 2027. The movie comes from Universal and Kosinski, who recently directed the hit film F1, as well as Top Gun: Maverick.
The new movie is mostly being kept under wraps, but will reportedly explore “the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami,” and will be “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking,” according to Variety.
Currently, no casting news has been made about the project. Casting is underway, though, with Variety noting that production is set to start next year, and will be filmed for IMAX.
Miami Vice originally began as a crime drama TV show that premiered in 1984. The series followed two detectives, James “Sonny” Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas), who were Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami. The series ran for five seasons, and was critically praised for its uniqueness as a police procedural, where it was inspired heavily by and integrated the 1980s New Wave culture of the time.
The original series was created by Anthony Yerkovich, and executive produced by legendary filmmaker Michael Mann. Mann would later go on to direct his own adaptation of the project in 2006, in a movie that starred Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as Tubbs and Crockett, respectively. That film was not well received upon its release, but has since grown into a cult classic for its stylized look and action sequences.
