Matt Damon recently responded to a curious and persistent rumor about how Netflix structures its movies and shows. In a new interview, the actor hinted at surprising behind-the-scenes practices. These may explain a common pattern in the platform’s storytelling.
Matt Damon says Netflix wants movies to iterate plot multiple times in dialogue
Matt Damon stated on The Joe Rogan Experience that Netflix requires movies to reiterate the plot multiple times in dialogue. He said, “‘And it wouldn’t be terrible if you reiterated the plot three or four times in the dialogue because people are on their phones while they’re watching’.” Damon also described Netflix’s preference for immediate spectacle, adding, “Now [Netflix] are like, ‘Can we get a big one in the first five minutes? We want people to stay’.”
Ben Affleck, Damon’s co-star in The Rip, responded by referencing projects that did not follow those guidelines. Affleck said, “But then you look at Adolescence and it didn’t do any of that s—… And it’s fing great.” Damon replied, “That feels like more the exception though,” while Affleck added, “My feeling is that it demonstrates that you don’t need to do any of that s.”
Damon’s comments echo a report from n+1 magazine, which revealed that Netflix designs films for distracted viewers. Characters often repeat key plot points aloud to help keep the audience on track. Rather than rely on visuals, scripts focus on spoken exposition.
Screenwriters in the report said Netflix executives push writers to use clear, repetitive dialogue. They expect characters to spell out their actions and goals. This approach ensures viewers can follow the story, even when not fully paying attention.
An example appears in Irish Wish, where Lindsay Lohan’s character explicitly outlines her situation by saying, “We spent a day together… Tomorrow I’m marrying Paul Kennedy.” Another character responds by clearly stating his next steps: “After this job is over I’m off to Bolivia to photograph an endangered tree lizard.” Netflix categorizes such content under “casual viewing,” reflecting a format designed for continuous comprehension regardless of viewer focus.
