David Del Rio, who plays Billy, didn’t appear in the Matlock fall finale, though the episode hinted at the conclusion of his storyline. The December 4 episode reportedly marked his final on-screen appearance, and the makers have written him off organically. Executive producer and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman told Deadline that David Del Rio’s final appearance was in Episode 7, titled “Prior Bad Acts.” She said, “I’m not going to discuss details, but what I can talk about is in terms of the show. The last episode you see him is in 7, and then you find out how Billy’s story ends, which is in a very organic way that has to do with our whole office and how things are being shaped in this merger.”
In the November 13 episode before his final appearance, Billy and his girlfriend, Claudia, shared a confusing scene in which she expressed that she no longer wanted to get married. The closed captions suggested that Billy said he did want to get married, though it sounded like he said the opposite. The camera remained fixed on Claudia the entire time, leaving Billy with no visible dialogue. It remains unclear where their story was meant to head from that point on.
In the December 11 episode, although Billy didn’t appear, a brief update about him was provided. Through Sarah’s voicemail, viewers learned that Billy had taken a personal day. The camera then shifted to Sarah, who receives a call from Billy, and through her reaction, confirms that Billy’s girlfriend had suffered a miscarriage.
It is worth noting that Del Rio’s character is not expected to be recast, as the makers have written him off the series. However, new actors such as Henry Haber and Sarah Wright Olsen are being added to the roster.
