The director of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and The Marvels, Nia DaCosta, has expressed her desire to direct a live-action movie version of the Invincible series. In a recent discussion, she expressed her interest in developing a film based on Prime Video’s hit adult animated superhero series and spoke about some of the elements that she wants to focus on.
Nia DaCosta wants to helm a live-action Invincible movie
While responding to a fan question during a recent Reddit AMA, the 36-year-old director disclosed that helming a live-action movie based on the Invincible series is on her to-do list.
“I would LOVE to direct a live-action film version of Robert Kirkman’s Invincible,” DaCosta said. She then described the aspects of Invincible that appeal the most to her, stating, “The comic and cartoon are amazing. I know exactly how I’d want to translate that world and that amazing father/son relationship to screen. I also just love the idea of making something in a superhero world that has some real grit and viscera–and sex!”
In 2017, Point Grey Pictures and Skybound Entertainment announced that a live-action movie of Invincible was in the works, with Universal Pictures set to distribute the film. However, no updates regarding the project followed the announcement, with an animated series based on Robert Kirkman’s acclaimed comic book series making its way on Prime Video in 2021 instead.
In an earlier conversation with ComicBook, Kirkman gave a cryptic update on the possibility of a live-action Invincible movie materializing, stating that his “television show makes it vastly easier and vastly more difficult in various different aspects of the development of the movie.” Nevertheless, he did seem to urge fans not to lose hope by adding, “I would be shocked if it doesn’t happen one day.”
The Invincible series is currently on track to release its fourth season in March 2026, with Season 5 already in production.
