Early reviews for Marshals have resulted in a modest debut on Rotten Tomatoes, where the Yellowstone spin-off is currently holding an average score. As critics weigh in on the new chapter centered on Kayce Dutton, the series has initially earned a mixed response.
What Marshals’ early reviews are saying
The Yellowstone universe continues to expand with Marshals, a post-series spin-off that moves beyond the ranch. It picks up approximately a year after the events of the original series and follows Kayce Dutton as he transitions into a new role as a U.S. Marshal.
Initial critical reactions suggest a divided response to the series’s new direction. Ana Dumaraog of ScreenRant described the change in direction as a bold move for the franchise, and noted that the first three episodes suggest “the potential for a big payoff.”
Katie Doll of CBR noted that the show can feel “formulaic and predictable” at times, but praised the refined cinematography and direction. She wrote, “Three episodes is not much to judge an entire series on. Hopefully, Marshals finds its hook that will keep people sucked in.” Doll added, “For now, Marshals’ only success is capturing a character with a well-known name and confining him to an ordinary procedural that loses the spark Yellowstone turned into a blazing fire.”
Andy Swift of TV Line wrote, “A visual treat with genuine heart, Marshals is enough of a crime procedural to appeal to viewers who enjoy a complete story told in 60 minutes, while also remaining prestigious enough to satisfy Yellowstone fans who might not typically watch a show like, say, S.W.A.T. or NCIS.”
Marshals starts with average Rotten Tomatoes score
The Yellowstone spin-off, Marshals, has opened to a moderate response on Rotten Tomatoes. The series currently holds a 60 percent approval rating from critics, reflecting a mixed initial reception. However, the score is based on just five published reviews so far, which means that the overall percentage may soon change.
