James Gunn addressed key behind-the-scenes updates for Superman: Man of Tomorrow as production on the sequel moves forward. The director confirmed the addition of a Game of Thrones alum to the creative team, marking a notable shift in the film’s visual approach.
James Gunn confirms cinematographer for Man of Tomorrow
In response to a question asking if the listing of Sam McCurdy as cinematographer was accurate, James Gunn replied, “Yes, Sam is our cinematographer.” When asked to confirm specifically for Man of Tomorrow, he stated, “Correct.”
McCurdy replaces Henry Braham, who had previously collaborated with Gunn on four films: Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Suicide Squad. McCurdy has worked with Gunn before, having served as the cinematographer for the Peacemaker series. His recent work includes the acclaimed television series Shōgun and the feature film The Descent.
In the same conversation, Gunn denied circulating rumors about auditions for Batman and Wonder Woman, stating, “No. All these rumors of Batman and Wonder Woman auditions are false.” He said Brainiac was the major casting news for the film and noted that most sizable roles involve characters already introduced. “Smaller roles are being casted now,” he said.
German actor Lars Eidinger plays Brainiac, the central villain in the upcoming sequel. David Corenswet returns as Superman. Nicholas Hoult reprises his role as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan returns as Lois Lane. Gunn previously said Superman and Lex Luthor will form an uneasy alliance to face a greater threat, implied to be Brainiac.
Superman (2025) earned $354 million domestically and $615 million worldwide. Warner Bros. reported a net revenue of $120 million. The film received critical acclaim and holds an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
